Redirects & 404s

Manage redirects and investigate repeated 404 requests without hiding genuine mistakes.

Redirects send visitors from an old route to the correct current destination. The 404 log helps you see which missing addresses are actually being requested.

Add a redirect when a real route moved

Use a redirect when a published URL has changed and there is a clear replacement. Point it directly to the final destination rather than creating a chain of several redirects.

Do not redirect every 404

Typos, scanners and made-up URLs do not all need a redirect. Use the 404 activity to identify meaningful old links or recurring mistakes.

After changing a content route

Open the old URL in a signed-out browser and confirm it reaches the intended new page. Also check Navigation and any important internal links so new visitors are not sent through the redirect unnecessarily.
